Jason Allen’s book Being A Christian: How Jesus Redeems All of Life is a pivotal, timely work on what it means to be a Christian in a post-modern world (simplified). When we think of the gospel we think of the good news proclaimed throughout the New Testament that Jesus has come to save us from our sins. What if, in saving us from sin, Jesus redeems other parts of our lives as well? This is the thesis of Allen’s book: Jesus not only redeems our souls but our very lives.
Covered in this book as part of the redemption of Christ are our working life, marriage, and everything about being a human person. It is a simple book really. Not simplistic in the sense of “dumbing down” the gospel, but bringing the bare necessity of what it means to be a Christian redeemed by Christ.
It is paramount that Christians realize the gospel is not exclusively for soul salvation, but that Jesus as Lord through the gospel rules over every part of our being. Indeed, the gospel is the message of good news for our earthly lives as well as for our eternal state. I highly recommend this book to use in Bible study or small groups that will hopefully prod you to think further about how the gospel impacts all of your life.
