Progress in the Pulpit

No pastor ever masters the task of preaching. To say one has perfected it is to lie. However, we can always learn. There is plenty to learn, critique, implement, and yes, even ignore.

Drs. Shaddix and Vines’ book Progress in the Pulpit reminds us we are to grow in our preaching. This book is designed to grow your preaching. Part One (1) revisits the roots of expository preaching. To the authors, expository preaching illumines the meaning of the text faithfully. Though some disagree with this method of preaching being the sole method, the authors provide substantive background information for returning to expository preaching (that is, verse-by-verse, book-by-book preaching that is Gospel and Christ-centered). The sermon is also meant to disciple and shepherd the congregation. To hear the Word of God preached faithfully is to hear from God. Part two (2) centers on the development of the sermon. In Power in the Pulpit, the book is a “how-to” on developing an expository sermon. In Progress in the Pulpit, the authors focus on present trends in preaching. Part three (3) is the mechanics of delivery. Language, critique, and worship of God in the sermon are aspects of preaching often neglected.

If you read Power in the Pulpit, you need to read Progress in the Pulpit. These two are complementary volumes. I would also note they are valuable contributions to the field of preaching. Expository preaching is a method from which any preacher can learn. I would recommend these two volumes as the initial exposure to expository preaching. I hope you will take the time to learn from two seasoned pastors, and I hope these volumes find their place on your bookshelf.
