Preparing For Advent

***Disclaimer: I received the following book for free in exchange for an honest review, whether positive or negative. All opinions expressed are my own.

Advent is a joyous time on the Christian calendar and devotions for the time can be scarce. That is why I recommend the following book as a beginning devotional to prepare our hearts for not only celebrating the first advent, but the anticipated second.

From Heaven: A 28-Day Advent Devotional by AW Tozer serves a two-fold function for the reader. It prepares our hearts to meditate upon and consider the weight of the first advent of Christ so long ago. Though born into uncertain times politically and religiously, the Christ came into the world for one purpose: to save sinners. There is one specific day dedicated to this foundational thought in Christian theology, and I greatly appreciated that. I also appreciated the passion behind calling Christians to Christ-like living prior to His Second Coming. It is as the introduction says: “A Journey of Preparing and Waiting” and that is what Tozer communicates so profoundly. Within this intermittent time, we are preparing ourselves and submitting ourselves to Christ while also waiting for the anticipated return.

I also appreciate the language. Tozer does not use theological jargon only meant for a few, but communicates passionately, and almost with a sense of newness, the messages of Scripture concerning Advent, Christ, and the place we currently find ourselves. He words these teachings in a conversational manner, as if he is sitting in front of you conversing about Christ with you. I think we could all learn something from this devotional as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ in our own homes. Full of teaching, wisdom, and exhortation, I urge you to pick up this little book and dig into Scripture this Advent season.
